Malaysia suffered a narrow 2-3 defeat against Hong Kong in the 2025 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships group stage match, held at Conson Gymnasium on February 12. The result puts Malaysia in a challenging position in Group B, making their upcoming match against Indonesia crucial for quarter-final qualification.
The match began with the mixed doubles event, where Malaysia’s Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin faced Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man and Ng Tsz Yau. Despite winning the first set 21-17, the Malaysian duo struggled in the next two sets, losing 17-21 and 11-21, giving Hong Kong an early lead of 1-0.
Malaysia quickly responded in the women’s singles match, as Letshanaa Karupathevan dominated her opponent, Saloni Samirbhai Mehta, in straight sets (21-18, 21-18), leveling the tie at 1-1.
However, Hong Kong regained the lead in the men’s singles, with Justin Hoh unable to overcome Lee Cheuk Yiu. The Malaysian shuttler fought hard but lost in straight sets (19-21, 16-21), putting Hong Kong ahead 2-1.
The decisive moment came in the women’s doubles, where Hong Kong’s Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam proved too strong for Malaysia’s representatives, winning comfortably with scores of 21-17 and 21-14. This victory secured the overall win for Hong Kong, as they led 3-1.
In the final match, Malaysia salvaged a point in the men’s doubles event. Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun claimed an easy-fought victory against Hung Kuei Chun and Lui Chun Wai, winning in straight sets (21-13, 21-11), but it was not enough to change the outcome, with the final score standing at 3-2 in favor of Hong Kong.
Following this defeat, Malaysia is now at the bottom of Group B and must secure a victory against Indonesia in their next match to keep their hopes alive for a quarter-final spot. With the stakes high, Malaysia will need a strong performance to turn their fortunes around in the tournament.
On the other hand, India beat Macau 5-0, sealing a place in the quarter-finals.
