Singapore, May 27, 2025 – Home favorite Loh Kean Yew demonstrated his resilience today at the Singapore Open 2025, battling back from a set down to defeat France’s Alex Lanier in a thrilling 32nd round encounter. The unseeded Loh emerged victorious with a 21-23, 21-17, 21-11 scoreline in a grueling match that lasted exactly 60 minutes.
The hard-fought win brings their head-to-head record to 1-1, after Lanier had previously gotten the better of Loh. Lanier’s exit marks the second upset of a seeded player in the men’s singles 32nd round at this year’s tournament, following the earlier departure of Anders Antonsen.
Loh Kean Yew will now prepare to face another French opponent in the Round of 16, Toma Junior Popov. The matchup bodes well for the Singaporean, who boasts a commanding 5-0 head-to-head record against Popov. Fans will be eager to see if Loh can maintain his dominance and continue his charge in his home tournament.
Mixed Fortunes for Other Singaporean Shuttlers
While Loh Kean Yew advanced, it was a different story for fellow Singaporean men’s singles representative Jason Teh. Teh was unable to progress past the first round, falling to top seed and defending champion Shi Yuqi of China in straight games, 21-16, 21-16.
However, there was more good news for the host nation in the women’s singles as Yeo Jia Min secured her spot in the next round. Yeo delivered a strong performance to defeat Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-14, 21-13. Her reward in the next round is a formidable challenge against reigning champion and top seed from South Korea, An Se-young.
