AirBadminton is the outdoor version of the sport of badminton. AirBadminton was launched on 13 May 2019 by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and HSBC, together with a new shuttle called AirShuttle.
BWF confirmed on 4 August 2022 that AirBadminton will debut at the ANOC World Beach Games Bali 2023 next year.
The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) announced that AirBadminton is one of four new sports to be added to its sports program in 2023.
AirBadminton was selected based on the basic criteria that the program should include beach sports that can be delivered sustainably and follow the Games’ goals of targeting youth and inclusivity.
BWF recently brought AirBadminton to the German city of Hamburg for the first ever AirBadminton Urban Series event. The next stop of the Urban Series tour is in September in Utrecht, Netherlands. The Urban Series Tournament is the main test event ahead of Bali 2023.
AirBadminton in Bali 2023 will feature 72 athletes (36 men and 36 women) in four medal events: Men’s Triples, Women’s Triples, Mixed Doubles, and the Mixed Team Event.
