History of Badminton at the Universiade
Badminton first appeared as an optional sport at the Summer Universiade in 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand. It subsequently featured as an optional sport in Shenzhen (2011), Kazan (2013), Gwangju (2015), and Taipei (2017). Due to its growing popularity and success, badminton became a compulsory sport at the FISU World University Games starting from the 2021 edition in Chengdu, China. Before its inclusion in the Universiade, the World University Badminton Championships had been held biennially since 1990.
