BWF Introduces 3 x 15 Scoring System, Replacing the 2 x 21 System?

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is taking a bold step toward revolutionizing the sport with the introduction of the 3 x 15 (setting to 21) scoring system. Endorsed by the BWF Council on 09 November 2024, this system is poised to replace the current scoring format, pending successful testing and stakeholder approval. The BWF is now inviting national and international leagues, as well as tournament organizers, to participate in practical testing of this innovative system from April to September/October 2025.

Why the Change?

The decision to explore a new scoring system stems from extensive analysis of match data from BWF Major Championships and World Tour tournaments. The 3 x 15 system emerged as the preferred option after being evaluated against the current system, the 2 x 21 format with a first-to-11 third game, and the 5 x 11 format. The 3 x 15 system strikes an optimal balance between excitement, match duration, and player health.

Key advantages of the 3 x 15 system include:

  1. More Exciting Points: With fewer points per game, each rally becomes more critical, increasing the intensity and thrill for players and fans alike.
  2. Faster Progression to Climactic Moments: Games reach their decisive stages quicker, maintaining fan engagement and ensuring consistent excitement throughout the match.
  3. Shorter Matches: The system reduces the total number of rallies, leading to better scheduling, sustained fan interest, and reduced physical strain on players, promoting their long-term health and career longevity.

Practical Testing and Stakeholder Feedback

To ensure the system’s viability, the BWF has approved a comprehensive testing plan. Selected Continental Championships, Grade 3 tournaments, national leagues, and international competitions will trial the 3 x 15 system in 2025. Alongside this, the BWF will conduct surveys to gather feedback from key stakeholders, including players, technical officials, commercial partners, and member associations.

The results of these tests and surveys will determine whether the BWF Council proposes the 3 x 15 system for adoption at the BWF Annual General Meeting in April 2026.
