by Dikdik Saparudin

The 2025 China Open, a Super 1000 event, concluded today at the Changzhou Olympic Sports Centre, delivering thrilling badminton action and some surprising results. Indonesian new pair, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, stole the show with a sensational victory in the Men’s Doubles, while Chinese shuttlers asserted their dominance in other categories.

In the Men’s Singles final, China’s Shi Yuqi emerged victorious after a hard-fought battle against fellow countryman Wang Zhengxing. Shi Yuqi displayed exceptional skill and composure, winning the match with a score of 14-21, 21-14, 21-15.

The Women’s Singles title went to China’s Wang Zhiyi, who showcased her prowess by defeating Han Yue in straight sets. Wang Zhiyi dominated the match with a convincing score of 21-8, 21-13, leaving no doubt about her superiority on the court.

The most anticipated match of the day, the Men’s Doubles final, saw an unexpected upset. The newly formed Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri delivered a stunning performance, defeating the second-seeded Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik with a commanding score of 21-15, 21-14. This victory marks a significant milestone for the Indonesian duo, signaling their arrival as a force to be reckoned with in the international circuit.

In the Women’s Doubles, the Chinese pair of Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning claimed the championship in a grueling three-set encounter against Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian. The match was a true test of endurance and skill, with Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning ultimately prevailing 24-22, 17-21, 21-14.

Finally, the Mixed Doubles title was secured by China’s Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping, who triumphed over their compatriots Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin. Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping displayed excellent coordination and strategic play, winning the final with a score of 23-21, 21-17.

Korea’s ‘Super Slam’ Bid Failed

Korean stars An Se-young and the Men’s Doubles pair of Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae arrived in Changzhou fresh off their victories at the Japan Open 2025, with their sights set on a historic achievement. A win at the China Open would have made them the first players ever to sweep all four BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournaments in a single season.

However, the “Super Slam” aspirations for Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae were ultimately dashed in the semifinals. The newly paired Indonesian duo of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri delivered a stunning upset, halting the Koreans’ impressive run. An Se-young’s pursuit of history also came to an unfortunate end when she retired during the second game of her semifinal match against China’s Han Yue.
