Defending Champ Tai Tzu-ying Upset in Taipei Open Quarter-finals

by Dikdik Saparudin

In a stunning upset, defending champion and top seed Tai Tzu-ying was eliminated from the 2024 Taipei Open badminton tournament in the quarter-finals. Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani pulled off the surprise victory, defeating Tai in a thrilling three-game match that lasted 1 hour and 8 minutes, with a final score of 21-18, 16-21, 22-24.

Tai, a former world number one and Olympic silver medalist, was the heavy favorite heading into the match. However, Wardani played with tremendous grit and determination, matching Tai shot for shot and taking advantage of every opportunity.

The loss is a major disappointment for Tai, who was hoping to defend her title in front of her home crowd. However, Wardani’s victory is a testament to her rising talent and potential.

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles event, top seed Chou Tien-chen cruised into the semi-finals with a comfortable straight-game victory over Malaysia’s Justin Hoh. Chou will now face compatriot Chi Yu-jen in the semi-finals, with a spot in the final on the line.
