Axiata Arena, located in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, stands as a premier multipurpose indoor arena. Originally constructed for the 1998 Commonwealth Games and formerly known as Putra Stadium, it was rebranded as Axiata Arena in 2017 through a sponsorship with Axiata Group Berhad, marking it as Malaysia’s first corporate-named stadium.
This versatile venue boasts a substantial seating capacity, accommodating up to 16,000 spectators for sports events and around 11,000 for concerts, making it the indoor arena with the highest seating capacity in Malaysia. The arena features 13,000 permanent upholstered seats and approximately 3,000 retractable seats, allowing for flexible configurations to suit various events. For concerts and other large-scale entertainment, the total capacity can be increased beyond 16,000.
The rectangular arena floor measures 69 meters by 25 meters, providing a suitable space for a wide array of sports, including badminton, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, boxing, judo, handball, wrestling, and gymnastics. Its design as a “black box” ensures that no natural light penetrates, making it ideal for daytime events, concerts, and exhibitions that require controlled lighting.
Axiata Arena is equipped with modern facilities, including a four-sided, full-color Samsung 4K UHD LED scoreboard for displaying real-time action and event information. It also features an advanced two-sound system with a 103dB power output and a pre-programmed floodlighting system capable of providing over 2,000 lux power, suitable for live and recorded HD telecasts. Additional amenities include VVIP holding rooms, corporate suites, changing rooms, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Located within the National Sports Complex of Bukit Jalil, Axiata Arena is part of a larger sporting precinct that includes the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, the National Hockey Stadium, the National Squash Centre, the National Aquatic Centre, and Seri Putra Hall. Its accessibility is enhanced by the nearby Bukit Jalil LRT station.
Throughout its history, Axiata Arena has hosted numerous significant national and international events, including the gymnastics events of the 1998 Commonwealth Games, the Thomas and Uber Cup in 2000, the 2017 SEA Games, and the 2009 ASEAN Para Games. It has also become a popular venue for concerts by international artists and various exhibitions and conferences, solidifying its role as a key entertainment and sports hub in Malaysia.
