RENNES, FRANCE – October 21, 2025 – Indonesia saw mixed fortunes on the opening day of the BWF World Tour Super 750 French Open 2025 at the Glaz Arena. Men’s Singles ace Anthony Sinisuka Ginting secured a comfortable victory, while Women’s Singles contender Gregoria Mariska Tunjung was eliminated after a tough three-game battle.
Ginting’s Smooth Start and Sweet Revenge
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting powered past his opponent from Hong Kong, Lee Cheuk Yiu, in straight games with a convincing score of 21-14, 21-13. The match, lasting just under 35 minutes, marked a significant high note for the Indonesian contingent.
The victory was particularly satisfying for Ginting as it served as revenge for a previous defeat to Lee Cheuk Yiu at the India Open in 2024. Despite trailing briefly at the start of the first game, the 29-year-old quickly regained control, pulling away to 11-8 at the interval and never looking back. In the second game, Ginting was dominant from the outset, surging to a 5-0 lead and sealing the win without needing a third game. This decisive performance propels Ginting into the Round of 16 with renewed confidence.
Gregoria’s Challenge Ends in Three Games
On the women’s singles side, the campaign for Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, seeded eighth, came to an abrupt halt. She faced tough resistance from China’s Gao Fangjie, ultimately losing in a grueling three-setter: 21-18, 6-21, 13-21.
Gregoria started brightly, seizing the first game after establishing a solid lead. However, the momentum swung heavily in the second game as Gao found her stride, dominating to win 21-6. In the deciding third game, the match was neck-and-neck until the midpoint, but Gao maintained her aggression in the latter stages, pulling away to secure the match and end Gregoria’s run in the opening round.
Other Indonesian Highlights
Despite Gregoria’s early exit, the Indonesian flag flew high in the Mixed Doubles, where Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu advanced smoothly. The young pair defeated Denmark’s Mads Vestergaard/Christine Busch in straight games, 21-7, 21-14, booking their place in the Round of 16. Additionally, the Women’s Doubles pair Lanny Tria Mayasari/Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi also secured their progression.
With Ginting and the two doubles pairs through, Indonesia remains hopeful for a strong showing as the French Open continues in the coming days.
