Aya Ohori, a badminton star from Japan, has surprised fans on social media with her decision to retire at the end of this season.
In a lengthy post, Aya Ohori wrote: “I have an important announcement to make. I have decided to retire at the end of this year. My badminton career hasn’t always been smooth, but thanks to the support of many people around me, I have made it this far.”
Ohori also expressed her gratitude to the Japan Badminton Association, her family, friends, and fans who have supported her throughout her career, no matter where she played.
“Without your support, I would not have reached where I am today. Through badminton, I have learned a lot and gained many incredible experiences.”
Ohori mentioned that she loves badminton deeply, and making the decision to retire was not easy.
“But looking back on my 22-year playing career, filled with happiness thanks to everyone’s support, I feel truly blessed.”
Ohori also revealed that the upcoming Japan Masters will be her last appearance as a player in her home country. She hopes everyone will come and cheer for her.
The 28-year-old Aya Ohori won a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.
This year, she claimed victory at the Thailand Masters (BWF World Tour Super 300) and won her first BWF World Tour Super 500 title in mid-June at the Australian Open.
