Macau is set to host the 16th edition of the Macau Badminton Open, a prestigious event that will once again be part of the HSBC Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour 300. This significant upgrade for the second consecutive year promises to attract a dazzling array of the world’s top badminton talent, including Olympic gold medalists and rising stars.
The tournament, co-organized by Sands China Ltd. and the Badminton Federation of Macau (BFM), will take place from July 29 to August 3 at the Macao East Asian Games Dome. A press conference held yesterday at The Londoner Macao unveiled the exciting details of this year’s competition.
Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd., expressed his enthusiasm for the returning tournament. “As the 2025 Macau Open will be held in the summertime, we hope to attract more teenagers to see this world-class badminton tournament during their summer vacation,” Wong stated. He emphasized the event’s role in elevating the synergy of “tourism + sports,” highlighting the participation of 442 elite players from 29 nations and regions, making it a vital “skills-exchange platform for global players.” Wong also noted Macau’s commitment to hosting sports events to boost professional local sports and socioeconomic development.
Kong Tat Choi, President of the BFM, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the tournament is not only a spectacular sports competition for Macau’s badminton players but also a key element in Macau’s ambition to become a “City of Sports.” He underlined the event’s contribution to deepening the “sports + tourism” integration and promoting economic diversification. Kong also revealed plans for optimized arena facilities and interactive elements to enhance the fan experience.
This six-day spectacle aims to draw numerous fans to Macau, encouraging them to enjoy the competition and explore the city’s attractions. Beyond the local audience, the tournament’s semi-finals and finals will be livestreamed on BWF TV, further enhancing Macau’s global profile.
A significant highlight of this year’s Macau Open is the substantial increase in prize money, reaching an unprecedented USD$370,000 (nearly MOP3 million). As a BWF World Tour Super 300 (Level 5) event, the tournament will feature five categories: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.
The competition will commence with qualifying rounds and Rounds of 32 on July 29 at 10 a.m., continuing with more Rounds of 32 on July 30. The Rounds of 16 will take place on July 31, followed by the Quarterfinals starting at noon on August 1. The Semifinals are scheduled for noon on August 2, with the Finals and Prize-Awarding Ceremony culminating the event on August 3.
