The Shenzhen Pingshan Sports Park, designed by the architecture studio MVRDV in collaboration with Huayi Design, is poised to become a landmark destination for sports enthusiasts and a testament to China’s dedication to badminton.
A Badminton Haven
The complex’s design draws inspiration from the sport of badminton, evident in its most striking feature: a 240-meter-long roof shaped like a badminton racket. This iconic roof not only serves as a visual centerpiece but also supports photovoltaic panels, contributing to the complex’s sustainability goals. The gridded structure of the roof further echoes the design of a racket’s strings, reinforcing the badminton theme.
The main building, nestled beneath this impressive roof, houses a stadium, training courts, and warm-up areas. A public level with expansive promenades surrounds these facilities, creating a vibrant and accessible space for visitors. The “sweet spot,” a plaza located at the intersection of these promenades, marks the entrance to the main arena and pays homage to the optimal hitting zone on a badminton racket.
A Multi-Sport Complex
While badminton takes center stage, the Shenzhen Pingshan Sports Park caters to a wide range of athletic pursuits. The complex includes a National Fitness Center, a 23-story tower inspired by the shape of a shuttlecock, and numerous outdoor courts for badminton, basketball, and football. The tower, divided into hotel rooms and short-stay apartments for athletes, further integrates with the complex’s dual access layers, ensuring privacy for high-level athletes.
The park’s design also addresses the challenge posed by the Pingyan Expressway flyover, which cuts diagonally across the site. MVRDV’s ingenious solution involves extending the park underneath the flyover, creating a seamless connection to a larger green corridor. This area features outdoor sports facilities like a skate park, basketball courts, table tennis tables, a running track, and a playground, promoting an active and inclusive environment for the community.
