2025 BAMTC: Singapore Nearly Upsets Host China

by Dikdik Saparudin

Singapore came close to pulling off a stunning upset against host nation China in the group stage of the 2025 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships. Despite putting up a strong fight, Singapore fell just short, with China securing a narrow 3-2 victory.

The match began with a thrilling mixed doubles contest. Singapore’s Terry Hee and Jin Yujia delivered an impressive performance, defeating China’s Gao Jiaxuan and Wu Mengying in three games (13-21, 21-11, 21-18). This crucial win gave Singapore an early 1-0 lead in the tie.

China quickly responded in the women’s singles match, where Xu Wenjing showcased her dominance by defeating Singapore’s Insyirah Khan in straight games (21-10, 21-10), leveling the score at 1-1.

In the men’s singles, Singapore regained the lead thanks to an outstanding performance from Jason Teh. Fresh off his triumph at the 2025 Thailand Masters, Teh proved his prowess by defeating Zhu Xuanchen in straight games (21-15, 21-15), pushing Singapore ahead 2-1.

However, China was determined not to let the match slip away. The men’s doubles pair of Keng Shuliang and Wang Tingge delivered a commanding performance, outplaying Singapore’s Heng Xiao En and Li Zheng Yan (21-9, 21-16), once again bringing the score level at 2-2.

With the match hanging in the balance, the final showdown came down to the women’s doubles. China’s Huang Di and Liu Yang proved too strong for Singapore’s Loh Kean Hean and Howin Wong, winning in straight games (21-10, 21-11) to seal China’s 3-2 victory.

Despite the loss, Singapore’s spirited performance demonstrated their growing strength in the badminton world. With one match remaining in the group stage, they will be looking to bounce back and keep their hopes alive in the tournament.
