BWF World Tour Calendar 2027-2028 Revealed
KUALA LUMPUR — The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has officially announced its global tournament calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The newly revealed schedule introduces major updates to the sport, including a brand-new scoring system, longer tournaments, and a massive 35-tournament circuit designed to take badminton to more fans across the world.
The calendar runs all year long, starting in January and ending in December. It features events ranging from the highest tier Super 1000 tournaments down to the Super 100 level, wrapping up each year with the prestigious BWF World Tour Finals.
Bigger and Better Super 1000 Tournaments
One of the biggest updates in the 2027–2028 calendar is how the top-tier Super 1000 tournaments will be played. There are five major Super 1000 host tournaments anchored across Asia and Europe. Instead of the traditional one-week format, these flagship events will now stretch across 11 days and cover two full weekends.
The format for these major events is also getting a fresh look:
- Singles Matches: Features a 48-player draw that begins with an intense group stage before moving into elimination knockout rounds.
- Doubles Matches: Features a 32-pair draw played entirely as a knockout tournament.
Fans who cannot watch the action in person will not miss out. BWF has confirmed that all 1,095 matches played across these five Super 1000 events will be broadcast globally, giving the sport unprecedented television and streaming coverage.
Players at the Center of the Decision
BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul explained that the new changes were made with the health, safety, and long-term success of the players in mind.
“Our players are at the heart of everything we do,” President Leeswadtrakul stated. “As global ambassadors and icons of our sport, they deserve an environment that allows them to perform at their best, recover properly, and connect meaningfully with fans around the world.”
She added that extending the tournament timelines gives players more rest days between tough matches, which will help protect them from injuries and allow them to extend their professional careers. At the same time, the larger scale of the tour means more media markets will televise badminton, accelerating the sport’s global growth.
A New Scoring System and Olympic Qualifications
The 2027 season will also mark a historic shift in how badminton matches are scored. Starting on Monday, January 4, 2027, all official tournaments will use a new 3×15 scoring system. This initiative is part of BWF’s long-term goal to modernize the sport, make games faster and more exciting, and improve the overall viewing experience for television audiences worldwide.
Additionally, the calendar will be crucial for athletes aiming for the highest stage in sports. The official qualification window for the LA28 Olympic Games will run from May 3, 2027, until April 30, 2028. Players will need to perform exceptionally well during this period to secure their spots for the Los Angeles Olympics.
Major international team events, including the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2027, the BWF World Championships 2027, and the BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2028, will have their exact dates and host cities announced separately.
