KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has officially announced that Geelong, Australia, will play host to the prestigious BWF World Senior Championships 2027.

As one of the BWF’s largest participation events, the championships are slated to bring together a massive global community of leading senior players competing across age categories ranging from 35+ to 80+. The tournament is projected to draw an estimated 2,500 players, officials, and international visitors to the vibrant port city of Geelong, located in the state of Victoria.

The announcement marks a historic return of top-tier badminton to the continent, representing the first BWF Major Championship to be staged in Australia since the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals were held in the Gold Coast in 2017.

Expanding the Global Footprint of Badminton

The selection of Australia highlights the governing body’s strategic push to diversify host nations and foster the sport’s development outside its traditional Asian and European strongholds.

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul expressed high enthusiasm for Oceania’s selection, stating:

“Taking the BWF World Senior Championships to Australia and Oceania reflects our firm commitment to elevating badminton as a truly global sport and expanding opportunities for players around the world. Badminton belongs to everyone. We want badminton to be a sport of choice that is accessible to people everywhere… and this tournament is an important step in supporting that vision.”

Local organizers are equally thrilled about the economic and sporting windfall the event promises to bring to the region. Badminton Australia President Julie McDonald lauded the successful bid as an incredible achievement for the nation.

“This event will not only bring the world’s best senior players to our shores, but also inspire participation, strengthen connections across generations, and create a lasting legacy for the sport nationwide,” McDonald noted, extending gratitude to the Victorian Government and the City of Greater Geelong for their critical backing.

A Major Transition: The World Senior Circuit to Debut Later This Year

The awarding of the 2027 hosting rights coincides with a radical restructuring of the senior badminton ecosystem. To accommodate the booming demographic of master-level athletes, the BWF is set to launch a brand-new World Senior Circuit later this year.

Beginning in the autumn of this year, the inaugural 2026 circuit will debut as a pilot program featuring three tournaments across three distinct continents:

TournamentDatesLocation
Cape Town International 2026September 23–27Cape Town, South Africa
VICTOR Denmark Senior 2026October 16–18Odense, Denmark
Badminton Asia Senior Championships 2026November 16–22Gwangju, South Korea

A Sport for Life: Rankings and Long-Term Vision

The ultimate blueprint for the BWF is to utilize the momentum from these three inaugural events to roll out a heavily structured, fully regulated global circuit from 2027 onward.

Crucially, tournament results from the upcoming circuit will be aggregated to formulate an official World Senior Ranking system. These rankings will directly dictate player seedings for future circuit tournaments and eventually determine qualification entry paths for the newly announced 2027 flagship event in Geelong.

“We are seeing a strong and growing community of players 35 years and above who continue to compete at an elite level well into their senior years,” President Leeswadtrakul added. “Our objective is to expand opportunities for badminton as a sport for life by developing a sustainable, Member-driven, cost-neutral, global senior tournament circuit.”
