TOKYO — In a major setback for international badminton, world number one An Se-young has unexpectedly withdrawn from the Daihatsu Japan Open 2026. The 24-year-old South Korean superstar, representing Samsung Life Insurance, made the decision to pull out midway through the tournament following a sudden injury to her left foot. The development has cast a shadow of uncertainty over her upcoming competitive calendar, including the high-stakes China Open (Super 1000) and September’s Asian Games.

A Sudden Halted Run

The announcement came directly from the Korea Badminton Association on July 15. According to officials, An began experiencing acute pain in the outer portion of her left foot during her opening women’s singles Round of 32 match at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

On the court, the top seed initially showed no outward signs of distress. She dismantled Japan’s rising star, Hina Akechi, in a blistering 32-minute masterclass that ended with a lopsided set score of 2-0 (21-6, 21-9). However, the victory proved costly. While she appeared to be cruising toward a heavily anticipated Round of 16 clash against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, the physical toll behind the scenes became impossible to ignore.

“The pain in the affected area is a recurring symptom that has occurred during past training and matches,” the Korea Badminton Association said in a statement. “She currently experiences discomfort and pain when putting weight on her left foot.”

Rather than risk aggravating the condition by stepping onto the court for the Round of 16, the medical staff and the association opted to prioritize her long-term health, forcing her to abandon the remainder of her Japan Open schedule.

Interrupting a Dominant Season

The injury marks a sudden roadblock in what has otherwise been an overwhelmingly dominant year for the world champion. An Se-young has been playing at a level distinct from the rest of the field, stringing together high-profile international accolades month after month.

Her remarkable 2026 run includes:

  • April: Gold medal at the Asian Individual Championships.
  • May & June: Back-to-back individual titles at the Singapore Open and the Indonesia Open.
  • Team Events: Led South Korea to sweeping victories at the Asian Team Badminton Championships (February) and the prestigious World Women’s Team Championships (Uber Cup) in May.
  • Additional Titles: Direct victories at the Malaysia Open and the India Open.

Remarkably, her only defeat on the circuit this year came in March during the final of the All England Open, where she was bested by China’s Wang Zhiyi. Following her victory at the Indonesia Open, An had taken a deliberate one-month hiatus to recharge her batteries explicitly for the grueling summer schedule, making the sudden re-emergence of the foot injury even more frustrating for her camp.

What Lies Ahead?

An Se-young is scheduled to return to South Korea early to undergo comprehensive medical checks and detailed scans to evaluate the exact extent of the damage.

The timing of the injury poses a massive logistical headache for the player and the national team. The highly competitive China Open is slated to begin in less than a week on July 21, and the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games loom large in September. Whether the reigning world champion will be fit enough to compete in either event hangs entirely on the results of her upcoming medical evaluation and the subsequent pace of her rehabilitation.

For now, the badminton world waits anxiously for updates on its top star, hoping that the quick intervention in Tokyo prevents a minor recurring pain from turning into a season-ending disaster.
