The BWF Player of the Year Awards 2024 will be announced on December 9, 2024, during the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals Gala Dinner. This year, there are several significant changes in the structure and voting process of the awards, making the event more prestigious and transparent.
For the 2024 edition, five marquee awards will recognize the top players or pairs in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The winners will be determined through a combination of world ranking points accumulated during the eligibility period and votes from an expert panel. The panel comprises individuals with distinguished careers in badminton, such as former players, coaches, commentators, and media members. Notably, the voting system has been modified to give more weight to world ranking points.
The eligibility period for the awards has been updated to run from December 1 to November 30. The final tournament for the current award cycle is the 2024 China Masters, and the points from this event will be factored into the awards. Additionally, tournaments such as the BWF World Tour Super 750, BWF World Tour Super 1000 events, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (for 2024 season) or the subsequent BWF World Championships will also influence the final outcome.
Besides the marquee categories, there are two player-voted awards: the Players’ Player of the Year (Men) and Players’ Player of the Year (Women), which replace the previous Most Improved award. The Eddy Choong Rising Star Award will recognize the best emerging talent and will be selected by the BWF Awards Commission. Moreover, para badminton players will be honored with separate awards for men’s and women’s para badminton players, as well as a para badminton pair.
This revamped structure aims to boost the prestige and inclusivity of the awards, making the process more transparent and engaging for key stakeholders. Nominees for the 2024 awards will be announced on December 2.
