Russian Athletes Alimov and Ogloblin Cleared to Compete as Neutral Athletes in BWF Tournaments

by Dikdik Saparudin

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has officially cleared two Russian badminton players, Rodion Alimov and Maksim Ogloblin, to participate in BWF-sanctioned tournaments as Individual Neutral Athletes. This landmark decision, effective for tournaments starting on or after August 11, 2025, marks a significant step in the return of Russian athletes to international badminton competition under strict neutrality guidelines.

The BWF Council initially approved a regulative framework on August 29, 2023, paving the way for athletes with Russian and Belarusian passports to compete as neutrals, provided they adhere to a stringent set of conditions. This move was made in alignment with the principles set forth by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the broader global sports movement, emphasizing open participation and promoting peace and solidarity.

Following this framework, comprehensive Participation Regulations were developed, and a dedicated Player Eligibility Panel was established to meticulously review and scrutinize all conditions of entry for prospective neutral athletes.

On May 12, 2025, the Player Eligibility Panel formally approved the participation of Alimov and Ogloblin. After an exhaustive due diligence process, the panel concluded that neither player had engaged in any activities inconsistent with the BWF’s and the Olympic Movement’s mission of peace.

As a result of this clearance, Alimov and Ogloblin are now subject to the robust anti-doping requirements and testing frameworks of both the BWF and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). They are eligible to enter tournaments with a starting date of August 11, 2025, meaning they can register for events with an entry deadline of July 15, 2025. Unlike traditional entries, these players will enter tournaments directly through the BWF.

This decision reflects the BWF’s commitment to providing fair opportunities for athletes while upholding the integrity and values of the sport. The return of Alimov and Ogloblin as Individual Neutral Athletes will be closely watched as the badminton world moves forward with its inclusive participation policies.
